A Tour of Robben Island and Nelson Mandela’s Cell

Robben Island, the infamous former prison off Cape Town’s coast, has а rich history. This 17th-century Dutch whaling outpost became a leper colony and prison under colonial rule. However, its infamy arose during the apartheid era (1961-1991), when it functioned as a maximum-security facility for political prisoners, including anti-apartheid leader and eventual president Nelson Mandela.
